Feature News: Forging Digital-First Innovation Through Disruption and Volatility
The Covid-19 disruption has driven home the urgency for business agility and the need to future-proof one's technology infrastructure to better survive similar future 'tsunamis'. Like other industries, the maritime sector faces the same pressure to accelerate digitalisation via emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), cyber security of operational technologies (OT), and more.

Maritime companies are inundated with challenges in today's fluid market conditions. These range from Covid-related supply chain crunch, climate change that requires the monitoring of ship emissions, calls for greater transparency in monitoring maritime performance, and the imperative to guard against increasingly virulent cyber-attacks — all while shoring up crew welfare.

Singtel organised two recent webinars which saw lively conversations around maritime digitalisation and discussions on how smart shipping can create new competitive advantages through digital innovation and transformed technology infrastructures. These would be vital in addressing challenges from securing operations, increasing efficiencies, addressing environmental impact, ensuring compliance, and lowering costs — both onboard and ashore.
Leading the Charge with Maritime Digitalisation
Singtel has been commissioned to deploy enhanced communications and cybersecurity solutions for 33 of PIL's vessels. Its VSAT bundle solution, comprising of AgilePlans® by KVH VSAT services and TracPhoneTM V7-HTS, provides global coverage for stable and secure connectivity across PIL's complex network of trade routes. Advanced cyber security solutions ensure unified threat management, while 24x7 technical support helps to protect, monitor and update equipment onboard PIL's vessels.

As one of the leading shipping companies in Asia, the Pacific International Lines (PIL) is spearheading its maritime digitalisation by installing satellite communication (VSAT) on its entire fleet of 100 vessels, with over 4,000 seafarers.

Recognising satellite connectivity as the mainstay for seamless connectivity at sea, PIL is enhancing its investments in digitalisation to continuously improve productivity onboard its vessels and enhance crew welfare. These include empowering the real-time analysis of IoT data from ship to shore to enable the predictive maintenance of machineries onboard. Crew welfare is also top-of-mind for PIL, who wanted to provide robust internet connection onboard so crew members can stay connected with their families. Strengthening its cyber defence is also key in boosting its security posture against today's malicious cyber actors, while ensuring International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) 2021 guidelines on safety management systems to address cyber risks.
Renewal of WTA Tier-4 Certification Highlights Commitment to Continuous Innovation

Underscoring our commitment to relentless innovation, Singtel is honoured to announce the renewal of the Tier 4 certification of our teleports in Bukit Timah and Seletar from the World Teleport Association. Back in 2018, Singtel teleports were the first in Southeast Asia to achieve full certification. This announcement distinguishes Singtel as the first ever satellite operator to be recertified. WTA's industry-recognised certification program provides transparency and independent verification for teleports to differentiate themselves and for customers to choose the price-performance level suitable for their applications.

Gaining this accolade further solidifies Singtel's regional leadership in high-value transmission services for broadcast, maritime and other segments. It also accentuates our constant strive to ensure resiliency and robustness of our facilities across our infrastructure, security and operational procedures. We remain committed to excellence as a forerunner in delivering leading managed satellite solutions, reliable satellite connectivity and secured managed ICT solutions across Asia, Middle East and Africa.
Enhancing Teleport Capabilities for Better Customer Experience and Engagement
As a trusted advisor in our customers' journey towards maritime digitalisation, Singtel is continually innovating to deliver the highest quality of security, infrastructure and operational standards in satellite communications. An example of our constant strive to enhance teleport capabilities and processes is the streamlining of the fault resolution process.

To further enhance customer experience and engagement, our previous "Docket Management Automation System" (DMAS), which tracks troubleshooting processes via an email processing system, fault ticketing platform and automation engine, has been upgraded to boost service delivery.

Empowering fault resolution with AI, the new engine incorporates the "Satellite Natural Language Processing (NLP) Engine" (SANE) module, which enables Singtel to better prioritise case resolution, while increasing customers' visibility in the resolution progress. The launch of DMAS-SANE has seen an improvement of overall customer satisfaction with fault resolution across the board.
